BASICS

For the first few meetings we have been (or will be) going over basic techniques and functions of a camera; exposure, shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. We have also been shooting a lot at each meeting, so remember to make a flickr account,  join our pool at NHS PhotC, and start submitting photos!

If you haven’t been coming and still intend to do so, please familiarize yourself with the aforementioned definitions by asking a friend or researching online (we used this site: Exposure Explained) so that when you come next meeting you won’t be left behind. :) Of course, if you still have any questions about anything, feel free to ask us or shoot us an email at: nhsphotc@gmail.com .

Don’t forget – if you haven’t paid club dues ($5) by now, you are liable to be kicked out! So bring those dues!

1st Meeting – MACRO!

Thanks for showing up guys! I hope everyone had a good time learning about macro and experimenting with the light box.

For those that didn’t show up, don’t worry; you can ask around next meeting to catch up. :)

Next week we are going to continue to work on macro – but we’ll be taking it outside into the courtyard (if the weather allows)! We’ll also be teaching exposure, so make sure you bring your cameras.

Reminder to all : IF YOU HAVE NOT YET PAID YOUR CLUB DUES (5$), DO SO ASAP PLEASE.

Thank you, and hope to see you next week!

Welcome to PhotC, 2010!

Hey new members – welcome to the NHS Photography Club, abbreviated PhotC and pronounced ‘FOT-see’.

We have a lot of things planned out for you guys this year, so hopefully you’ll have fun and take away as much as possible from our meetings! In addition to our weekly meetings, we’ll have opportunities to shoot with the Environmental Brigade, yearbook, and other off-campus/field trip events. These extracurricular activities aren’t required as a part of PhotC but are encouraged, as they will provide great hands-on experience and (hopefully) fond memories.

Meetings will be held after school every Tuesday (3:50PM – 4:55PM) in Ms. Rogers room (Rm.132). Attendance requirements as well as other classroom/misc. rules can be found at the top bar labeled “Rules”.

(If you’re too lazy… basically, make at least two meetings a month.)

Today we had our first meeting! Basically we covered our goals for this year and introduced the classroom rules. If you missed this first meeting, don’t worry – you’ll have plenty of opportunities to catch up. :) Next week we’re going over macro, so please bring your cameras and any small objects that you might want to photograph. The contest theme for the following two weeks is “potential”. Feel free to interpret this however you like – be creative!

Hope to see you all next week!

Photo Scavenger Hunt

To those of you who didn’t come (A LOT), you missed on the Photo Scavenger Hunt advantage!

That’s right, we’re having a Photo Scavenger Hunt. And all the members who showed up today got the list and the entire hour to look for the items.

Basically, what you need to do is find all the things on the list and take a photo of item. One photo per item; one item per photo. The winner will be rewarded with a gift card- and the winner will be judged not only on completion of the hunt but also the quality of their photography. We’ll probably give a point for having the photo of the item and an extra point for quality, or creativity. :) So this requires a bit of effort!

Here’s the list of items! You have all this week to find them (they can all be found in the school, but if you can find them out of school, that’s okay as well) and we’ll probably give you next meeting as well since so many people didn’t show up. But the clock is ticking. :) Oh, you can “stage” some items- like the epic swordfight, you can make the footprint yourself, etc. You can move objects to make a nonhuman face. But you can’t draw the item and take a photo of it. Be sensible.

THE LIST.

1. feather
2. pacifier
3. ribbons
4. pink masking tape
5. nonhuman face
6. balloon
7. chair in the forest
8. footprint
9. 08-09 agenda
10. plaid shirt
11. crutch
12. shamwow
13. palm tree
14. bike chain
15. mohawk
16. wheels
17. dolphins
18. epic swordfight
19. pelican
20. cowboy hat
21. golf club
22. leopard print
23. apple core
24. christmas lights
25. piggybank
26. the pi symbol
27. mole (animal variety)
28. chopstick
29. golf cart
30. Mr. O’Shea. (who will be attempting to disguise himself.)

Last thing- guys, I know you’ve all probably heard of the Haitian earthquake by now, but it doesn’t make the news any less devastating. Please, please bring a dollar tomorrow or Thursday to donate to the setup in the cafeteria during lunch. If everyone from PhotC can contribute a dollar, that’s a few dollars more towards a seriously good cause.

Thanks.

Yesterday’s Meeting + Next’s Week’s Plan

In yesterday’s meeting, we used THIS site to teach you panning. Please use this site for more practice if you can and collect good photos for our PhotC ’10 ‘Yarbook’.

PhotC is meeting next Tuesday on November 24th, but you can leave early at 4:30 p.m. We might be doing macro-box photography on that day, and the Council will probably bring some baked goods to share. For this next meeting, please bring a small, visually interesting object to macro.

Meanwhile, Council members must stay behind next Tuesday, as we’ll be heading to the H/White Windmill/Mozart right after we let out to plan for the rest of the semester and the next, ESPECIALLY THE PHOTOSHOW. Council MUST show up. We’ll most likely be taking the meeting to 5:30pm.

  • Also, if possible, try to make a light tent over the weekend using THIS site.

And, of course: FLICKR, FLICKR, FLICKR! We’re only getting participation from maybe four members. We want to see more!

If you’re new, please email the club (nhsphotc@gmail.com) with ‘PHOTC NEWBIE’ in the subject, so we can add you.

Bubble Photography Information

For the October 20th meeting, please bring bubble wands/bubble mix (bubble mix can be made with dishwashing soap + water) and your cameras.

Also, you should be keeping large versions of your photo (a minimum of 2000 px across) in landscape format for when we publish the end of year book, which includes edited photos.

New Attendance Policy

You must attend at least 2 meetings a month. Preferably more, but if you cannot, you must make the effort to come to at least 2 meetings a month. If you know in advance that you cannot attend the meeting, please email us in advance to let us know for an excused absence. Excused absences count for half an attendance. If you are on probation, you must attend 3 meetings the next month to get off the probation list. If you only attend 2 meetings, you will continue to stay on the probation list but will not be kicked out. If you attend 1 meeting or do not go to any meetings at all while on the probation list, you will be kicked out of PhotC. If you wish to rejoin after being kicked out, you will need to pay another club entrance fee of $5. Because this policy was not clearly announced before, the month of September did not count. This policy will begin in October 2009. If you have any questions, please contact Jenny Min or another PhotC officer. Thank you for your cooperation.

Also, please continue to submit your pictures (especially the silhouette ones) to Flickr! :)
